- The Black and White Adjustment layer converts an image into black and white, but provides many sliders to alter the way individual colours are reproduced.

- If you use the Black and White Adjustment Layer set to Luminosity Blending Mode, then the resulting image is in full colour, not black and white, and you can adjust the brightness of each colour quite precisely and with a high level of control. (Ref).
